Coming Up Next: Hans van Roon and Mongols, China and the Silk Road: Archeology and History of the Silk Road

On the Saturday, August 18 broadcast of Marvels of China: Pathways to the Pacific Rim I will be welcoming from Rotterdam in the Netherlands Mr. Hans van Roon.

He is the blogger behind Mongols, China and the Silk Road: Archeology and History of the Silk Road

Little was known on the mysterious, remarkable heritage of the ancient Silk Road -that is, until a century ago when explorers and archeologists uncovered the ruins of ancient cities. These same explorers who braved the deserts of Central Asia and China brought the wonders of the ancient silk roads to the world’s attention.

The work continues today in the 21st century. Eclectic, cosmopolitan, sophisticated societies dotted the region with a bewildering universe of cultures, languages and religions -Chinese, Indians, Mongols, Turks, Persians, Buddhists, Nestorian Chrstians, Manicheans and others.

You can learn about the latest through van Roon’s blog site (here) and Twitter (here).

My own introduction to the Ancient Silk Roads came in the form of a stunning exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, Along the Ancient Silk Routes: Central Asian Art from the West Berlin State Museums. It was the first time such an exhibit was held in the USA. I was escorting a university group on a field trip, and to this day I recall how riveted we were. The catalog is no longer in print, but you can find it freely available online via Google Books here and here via Archive.org

We'll feature the Confucius Moment, the Weekly Almanac, Treasures of China, Chinese Fun Facts and more!
