Coming Up Next: Dr. Adriana Proser, John H. Foster Curator of Traditional Asian Art at the Asia Society New York City

Adriana Proser is the John H. Foster Curator of Traditional Asian Art at the Asia Society New York City USA. Join me on Saturday, June 3 as I welcome her to Conversations on Marvels of China: Pathways to the Pacific Rim.

A specialist in Chinese art, over the last fifteen years she has organized and co-organized over forty exhibitions featuring diverse works from all over Asia. These include the upcoming loan exhibition Buddhist Art of Myanmar and the exhibitions Gilded Splendor: Treasures of China’s Liao Empire and Princes and Painters in Mughal Delhi, 1707-1857 for Asia Society Museum.

Her publications include Pilgrimage and Buddhist Art (Asia Society Museum and Yale University Press, 2010), for which she served as editor and contributor.

Dr. Proser is recipient of a Ph.D. in Chinese art and archaeology from Columbia University. Proser was formerly Assistant Curator of East Asian Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Dr. Proser will be commenting on Secrets of the Sea: A Tang Shipwreck and Early Trade in Asia on exhibit at the Asia Society Museum in New York City.

NOTE: The final day of this exhibit is Sunday, June 4, 2017, the day after this broadcast.

For more information on this remarkable exhibit go to this link to Artsy.com

Secrets of the Sea: A Tang Shipwreck and Early Trade in Asia features precious cargo—bound for the Abbasid Caliphate, an empire that included present-day Iran and Iraq, and produced in China during the Tang dynasty (618–907)—including ceramics, gold and silver vessels, bronze mirrors, and other artifacts.

Discovered in 1998 off of Belitung Island, Indonesia, the ship’s contents were miraculously protected from erosion and breakage by tight and ingenious packing as well as the conditions of the silty floor of the Java Sea.

Until the discovery of this ship, it was believed that the Tang traded primarily through Central Asian land routes, mainly on the Silk Road. The discovery of the ship’s cargo confirmed the significant maritime trade route. Most of the works in the exhibition have never traveled outside Asia.

Highlights in the exhibition include a magnificent ewer and other glazed stoneware objects with copper green splashes over white slip, which were highly desirable in the Middle East, also known as West Asia, from the largest cache of this type of ware recorded to date. A Chinese blue-and-white stoneware dish, with a lozenge motif that was common in West Asia, is one of three from the shipwreck.

Created around 830, they are some of the earliest known complete examples of Chinese blue-and-white ceramics. The cobalt-blue pigments used, imported from the Abbasid Caliphate, had previously been found only in that part of the world and had not yet appeared in China. The exhibition also boasts rare and imperial-quality silver boxes and gold vessels, which are thought to have been used in trade negotiations and as diplomatic gifts.

"The artifacts exhibited will expose American audiences to the rich narratives of the two great trading powers of the ninth century—Tang China and the Abbasid Caliphate—and highlight ancient Asia’s early advances into industrial production for the export market,” noted Kennie Ting, director of the Asian Civilisations Museum, Singapore.

Scholar Regina Krahl delivered this keynote address at a symposium dedicated to the exhibition Secrets of the Sea: A Tang Shipwreck and Early Trade in Asia on display at Asia Society through June 4. The symposium was co-organized by Asia Society and the Tang Center for Early China at Columbia University.

Recommended: Age of Empires: Chinese Art of the Qin and Han Dynasties (221 B.C.–A.D. 220) at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City USA

On Sunday, May 28 I visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. On exhibit now is 'Age of Empires: Chinese Art of the Qin and Han Dynasties (221 B.C.–A.D. 220)'

I highly recommend it.

Exhibition Dates: April 3–July 16, 2017
The Met Fifth Avenue, Gallery 899, The Tisch Galleries

A major international loan exhibition featuring more than 160 ancient Chinese works of art—including renowned terracotta army warriors—will go on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art beginning April 3. Synthesizing new in-depth research and archaeological discoveries of the last 50 years, the landmark exhibition Age of Empires: Chinese Art of the Qin and Han Dynasties (221 B.C.– A.D. 220) will explore the unprecedented role of art in creating a new and lasting Chinese cultural identity. The works in the exhibition—extremely rare ceramics, metalwork, textiles, sculpture, painting, calligraphy, and architectural models—are drawn exclusively from 32 museums and archaeological institutions in the People’s Republic of China, and a majority of the works have never before been seen in the West. The exhibition will also examine ancient China’s relationship with the outside world.

Thomas P. Campbell, Director of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, stated: “It is a great pleasure for us to present this magnificent assemblage of treasures from China. A project of such scale and scope could not be realized without the strong support and cooperation of lending organizations and their staffs. As the largest and most important display of Chinese art to be held in the United States in 2017, the exhibition establishes a new milestone in U.S.-China cultural exchange.”

“This exhibition is the culmination of our long history of collaboration with China that began in 1980,” said Maxwell, K. Hearn, Douglas Dillon Chairman of The Met’s Department of Asian Art. “We thank especially China’s State Council, Ministry of Culture and State Administration of Cultural Heritage, as well as both the U. S. Department of State and China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for their steadfast support and guidance.”

Jason Sun, Brooke Russell Astor Curator of Chinese Art in The Met’s Department of Asian Art, stated: “The Han Empire represents the ‘classical’ era of Chinese civilization, coinciding in importance and in time with Greco-Roman civilization in the West. Like the Roman Empire, the Han state brought together people of diverse backgrounds under a centralized government that fostered a new ‘Chinese’ identity. Even today, most Chinese refer to themselves as the ‘Han people’—the single largest ethnic group in the world. Thanks to new scholarship as well as the extraordinary artifacts unearthed by archaeologists in the past 50 years, this exhibition offers many new art-historical, cultural, and political insights. I’m delighted that Age of Empires can introduce this largely unknown era of Chinese civilization to our global audience.”

Greenwich-Hangzhou Sister City Announcement

The delegation of government and financial leaders from Hangzhou arrived for a ceremonial signing of a resolution announcing Sister City status between Hangzhou and Greenwich.

I attended this event and express my thanks to the First Selectman’s Economic Advisory Committee for extending an invitation.

Greenwich First Selectman Peter Tesei greeted the delegation led by Tao Guo, Secretary General of the Zhejiang International Hedge Fund Talent Association.

Greenwich and Hangzhou will promote social, cultural and commercial relationships to “broaden and strengthen ties, developing cooperation through initiatives and projects that increase awareness that both cities are global financial centers.”

In 2013 Chinese journalists visited Seattle, Washington, California’s Silicon Valley and Greenwich, Connecticut. A future “fund town” architectural development team provided first-hand impressions of what to emulate for returning ex-pat North American-educated Chinese, replicating living and working environments found in the USA.

Greenwich, Connecticut was distinguished by its proximity to an urban center, maintaining an outstanding lifestyle setting, diverse commercial facilities and a concentration of industry leaders, financial figures and wealthy, high net worth residents.

Greenwich, ranking third globally with its concentration of 380 hedge funds managing $250 billion in assets, became the model for the development Shangcheng, China’s first investment management commercial park. Located just outside Hangzhou, it is home to China’s largest stock exchange.

In 2016 a reciprocal fact-finding visit included chair of the Economic Advisory Committee Jim Aiello, Greenwich business consultant Bob Lardon, and Bruce McGuire, founder and president of the Greenwich-based Connecticut Hedge Fund Association. They attended a conference on Global Alternative Investments hosted by the People’s Government of Zheijang Province and the Asset Management Association of China.

The signing ceremony is expected to mark the start of promoting cultural and commercial ties between Hangzhou and Greenwich.

The Connecticut Hedge Fund Association’s mission is to promote a favorable business climate for hedge funds operating in Connecticut and provide networking and educational forums.

The Chinese Hedge Fund and Talent Association is sponsored by the Finance Office of the Zhejiang provincial government. It is headquartered in the city of Hangzhou. The association is China’s largest body of senior hedge fund portfolio managers and influential figures in the asset management industry.

Coming Up Next: It's Dragon Boat Festival Time!

Years ago I was out for a morning run in Ala Moana Beach Park in Honolulu. A friend of mine from China stopped me in my tracks. Why? The Dragon Boat Races were ready to start -but there was just one problem. My friend’s team was short a paddler. He asked me to step in. How could I refuse?

Out team placed overall second-place, but my arms were sore for days on end afterward. With that I enjoyed my first direct experience with this centuries old Chinese tradition.
