Coming Up Next: Cy Feng of the Honda International Center, Kapiolani Community College, Hawaii

On the Saturday, September 1 broadcast of Marvels of China: Pathways to the Pacific Rim I will be welcoming back Mr. Cy Feng of the Honda International Center (HIC) at Kapiolani Community College in Honolulu.

HIC was named after Paul S. Honda, a Hawaii community leader, businessman and philanthropist. Honda had a vision of bringing students of various backgrounds around the Asia Pacific Rim to study and learn together and chart a peaceful path towards a bright future. In this encore interview with Cy Feng he will present HIC’s educational mission, activities and how you can also come and study here.

Mr Honda’s life was colorful. He died on July 31, 2016. Go here to read his obituary.

I’m delighted to announce that I will be returning occasionally to HIC to teach East Asian student groups in Hawaii on short-term study programs. It’s good to be back with former and new colleagues.

We’ll feature our regular segments. It’s also Labor Day weekend throughout the USA!

Coming Up Next: William Chu and Chinese Baseball

Coming up on the Saturday, August 25 broadcast of Marvels of China: Pathways to the Pacific Rim I will be welcoming self-described baseball fanatic William Chu, the first-generation Chinese American New Yorker behind the Chinese baseball blog site ChineseBangqiu.com.

“I believe that baseball is for everyone. Domestically, I want to increase baseball’s profile with Asian-Americans.” That sounds like a home run to me -and I’ll bet that’s true for you.

There are a growing number of Chinese nationals and Chinese Americans who are players in the major leagues. Baseball has won many fans in places such as Japan and South Korea -and China, too!

Tune in for our featured segments: the Confucius Moment, the Weekly Almanac, Treasures of China, Chinese Fun Facts and more!

Interprets Old and Modern China: Rose Quong, Chinese Actress, Appears Before Woman's Club, Greenwich Connecticut USA (1936)

Source: The Greenwich Press, Greenwich, Connecticut USA
January 23, 1936.

Miss Rose Quong, the Chinese actress with a long experience on American and European stages, presented a unique interpretation of ancient and modern China before a large audience of the Woman's Club of Greenwich in the Masonic Temple yesterday afternoon. Dressed in a flowing Chinese kimono elaborately embroidered in  blue with her hair drawn back in coils at her ears in the traditional Chinese fashion, Miss Quong belied her Oriental appearance by speaking clear, an accented English no different than that spoken by any number of cultured American actresses.

If her speech was Broadway, her presentation was wholly Chinese, however. After discussing China briefly and comparing the Oriental with the western world, she presented a program of monologues illustrative of Chinese life, poems, stories and Chinese proverbs. The poems she first recited in English and then chanted in Chinese.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the program that was Miss Quong's discussion of Chinese philosophy, illustrated with the proverbs so dear to every Chinese heart. Among those which, she said, best expressed her people's philosophic attitude towards life were the following:

If you have two loaves of bread, sell one and buy a lily.

Never stoop to tie your shoestrings in another man's melon patch.

Better to be a tiny piece of jade than a whole tile.

As an illustration of the influence on Chinese life and thought of the teachings of the great Chinese philosophers, Miss Quong said that the first words that a Chinese child learns are from Confucius: Man by nature is born good. She contrasted this serious thought with the first words in the first English primer she ever saw. They were: The cat sat on the mat.

Preceding the main portion of the program, Mrs. Maynard W. Linn, commissioner of the Greenwich Girl Scout Council, discussed the needs of the council and the functions that it performs in Greenwich.

"There are 2000 girls in Greenwich who have no connection with character agencies," she declared. "The Girl Scouts perform a service not only to girls but to the community as a whole, and are a privilege that all can enjoy."

Coming Up Next: Hans van Roon and Mongols, China and the Silk Road: Archeology and History of the Silk Road

On the Saturday, August 18 broadcast of Marvels of China: Pathways to the Pacific Rim I will be welcoming from Rotterdam in the Netherlands Mr. Hans van Roon.

He is the blogger behind Mongols, China and the Silk Road: Archeology and History of the Silk Road

Little was known on the mysterious, remarkable heritage of the ancient Silk Road -that is, until a century ago when explorers and archeologists uncovered the ruins of ancient cities. These same explorers who braved the deserts of Central Asia and China brought the wonders of the ancient silk roads to the world’s attention.

The work continues today in the 21st century. Eclectic, cosmopolitan, sophisticated societies dotted the region with a bewildering universe of cultures, languages and religions -Chinese, Indians, Mongols, Turks, Persians, Buddhists, Nestorian Chrstians, Manicheans and others.

You can learn about the latest through van Roon’s blog site (here) and Twitter (here).

My own introduction to the Ancient Silk Roads came in the form of a stunning exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, Along the Ancient Silk Routes: Central Asian Art from the West Berlin State Museums. It was the first time such an exhibit was held in the USA. I was escorting a university group on a field trip, and to this day I recall how riveted we were. The catalog is no longer in print, but you can find it freely available online via Google Books here and here via Archive.org

We'll feature the Confucius Moment, the Weekly Almanac, Treasures of China, Chinese Fun Facts and more!

Coming Up Next: Tommy Gong, Author of Bruce Lee: The Evolution of a Martial Artist

Joining me on the Saturday, August 11 broadcast of Marvels of China: Pathways to the Pacific Rim is Tommy Gong, the author of Bruce Lee: The Evolution of a Martial Artist.

Tracing Bruce Lee’s path from wing chun student to jeet kune do founder, Gong’s biography chronicles Lee’s physical journey—from Hong Kong to Seattle to Oakland to Los Angeles and back again to Hong Kong—as well as his voyage of self-discovery and actualization.

His book draws on numerous conversations with Bruce Lee’s childhood classmates, former students, and family friends, offering a unique insight into the life of the legendary martial artist. It also offers a wealth of rare and unique photos, letters, and personal writings courtesy of Lee’s wife, Linda Lee Cadwell, and his daughter Shannon.
