Support The Marvels of China: Pathways to the Pacific Rim Show's GoFundMe Campaign

We are presently concluding the third successful year of the Marvels of China: Pathways to the Pacific Rim Show on its flagship station 1490 WGCH Greenwich, Connecticut USA and WGCH.com anywhere via audio streaming.  We've started a GoFundMe campaign in order to gain the support needed to get us started on our fourth year on-the-air.
It all started three years ago. I was a guest of the Chinese government for its 70th year anniversary of the end of World War II in September, 2015.
Why me? My late father was one of the last of the 'China Marines' who fought in the war against Japanese militarized imperialists. He was in Tianjin for the official surrender and stationed in Beijing until April 1946. I never knew that my late father and the other China Marines are considered national heroes among the Chinese people.

When I returned to the USA I was interviewed on a daytime talk show on 1490 WGCH . They were so impressed with my performance that I was offered a half-hour weekly spot right then and there! Two months later -and with a Beijing-based title sponsor I was on-the-air.

Marvels of China: Pathways to the Pacific Rim  -like my trip to China- was transformational. The show has been a positive one, connecting people and reporting on culture and history like nothing like it before. We've accomplished much -and there's more to do.

Why am I  asking for funds? In order to continue the show I need to raise funds for airtime fees all radio stations require. Contrary to some perceptions we are not employees of the radio station; most of us function as independent contractors.

This fundraiser is intended to pay for a portion those annual airtime fees.  You can also contact me if you want to be a guest on the Conversations segment, or if you would like to sponsor or advertise on the show.

The show has been approved for national syndication, too! In the future we want to broadcast from two stations in New York City, and others in Boston, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

For now I need to get our airtime obligations to our flagship station 1490 WGCH Greenwich Connecticut taken care of.

Want to know more? Listen to the show on WGCH.com  on Saturday mornings starting 10:30 a.m. Eastern USA Time.
Go to this link to listen to archived shows going all the way to our inaugural broadcasts in early 2016.

I see a bright future for the show. There's more need than ever for Marvels of China: Pathways to the Pacific Rim to continue.  Please join with me! I'd love to have you as a listener and a sponsor. Small investments have a way of adding up.
Thank you! Xiexie!

Coming Up Next: Antique Shanghai Pop Music with Mr. Ling (Encore)

Long-time listeners may remember my Year 2016 interview with Mr. Ling, the man behind the podcast, Antique Shanghai Pop Music. On this American Thanksgiving holiday weekend I thought our newer audience members would enjoy my conversation with Ling about the pop music scene in 1920s, 1930s and 1940s Shanghai.

The tumultuous history and cultural upheavals in 20th century Shanghai was like nothing anywhere else in the world. It's pop music scene uniquely blended elements of Chinese, American and Japanese influences with new recording and broadcasting technologies. Ling's commentary explains in context "a unique sentimentality that is not only understood through the context of history; it can be thought as a discontinued school of aesthetics, a lost craft."

On this American Thanksgiving holiday weekend I wish to convey to all of you my sincerest gratitude to so many of you who tune-in each week, and to all of our show's supporters -past and present- and to 1490 WGCH/WGCH.com who work hard to make Marvels of China: Pathways to the Pacific Rim possible. Coming Up Next: Herb Tam, Curator, Museum of Chinese in America New York City: Radical Machines Chinese in the Information Age

Be sure to tune-in to the Saturday, November 17 broadcast of Marvels of China: Pathways to the Pacific Rim in 1490 WGCH and WGCH.com anywhere via audio-streaming.

My guest on Conversations is Herb Tam, the curator of the Museum of Chinese in America New York City (MOCANYC)

We’ll discuss the museum's newest exhibition, Radical Machines: Chinese in the Information Age. It explores the seemingly impossible, yet technologically crucial Chinese typewriter – a machine that inputs a language with no alphabet -yet has more than 70,000 characters.

For centuries, written Chinese has presented fascinating and irresistible puzzles for engineers, linguists, and entrepreneurs alike. With help from the global community, China solved these puzzles, and Chinese became one of the world’s most successful languages in the information age.

Radical Machines explores the design, technology, and art of Chinese characters in the information age. Through a collection of rare typewriters and computers — and a diverse array of historic photographs, telegraph code books, typing manuals, ephemera, propaganda posters, and more — we gain unprecedented insight into the still-transforming history of the world’s oldest living language.

The exhibition originated at the East Asia Library of Stanford University and is curated by Stanford historian Dr. Tom Mullaney. Composed of items in his personal collection, which is the largest Chinese and Pan-Asian typewriter and information and technology (IT) collection in the world.

We'll feature the Confucius Moment, the Weekly Almanac, take you on a voyage to one of the Treasures of China, Chinese Fun Facts -and more!

Now that most of the USA has returned to Standard Time our broadcasts start at 10:30 a.m. Eastern USA Time/11:30 p.m. Beijing Time on Radio 1490 WGCH and WGCH.com anywhere via audio-streaming.
