William Yin Named a 2017 Davidson Fellow
Reno, Nev. – The Davidson Institute of Talent Development has announced the 2017 Davidson Fellows. Among the honorees is 18-year-old William Yin of Greenwich.
Yin won a $25,000 Davidson Fellows Scholarship for his project, Portable, Low-Cost Tattoo-Based Biosensor for the Non-Invasive Self-Diagnosis and Quantification of Atherosclerosis. He is one of only 20 students across the country to receive this honor.
“The Davidson Fellows Scholarship has allowed me to further pursue my research so that I may eventually introduce my device to a clinical setting,” said Yin. “In this way, I hope for this cost-effective and portable biosensor to greatly expand global access to diagnostic technology for atherosclerosis.”
Atherosclerosis and subsequent cardiovascular disease are jointly
considered the leading cause of death globally, accounting for nearly one third of all deaths around the world. Early diagnosis of the disease is essential in preventing the onset of severe cardiac events, such as heart attacks or strokes.

Yin’s research involved the development of a cost-effective, portable, efficient, and readily-accessible tattoo-based biosensor for the early diagnosis and quantification of atherosclerosis and its disease progression. The patch is designed to be placed on the skin outside of the carotid bifurcation, and communicates diagnostic results to the patient within 70 minutes.
At school, Yin has served as the leader of many clubs and organizations. He has participated in numerous science fairs, placing several times at both the Intel ISEF and ISWEEEP. He will present his work later this year at the Stockholm International Youth Science Seminar in Sweden during the Nobel Prize ceremony.
Yin will attend Stanford University this fall. He has yet to decide his major, but hopes to pursue studies that involve research and innovation.

The 2017 Davidson Fellows will be honored at a reception in Washington, D.C., on September 27.
The Davidson Fellows Scholarship program offers $50,000, $25,000 and $10,000 college scholarships to students 18 or younger, who have completed significant projects that have the potential to benefit society in the fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, literature and music. The Davidson Fellows Scholarship has provided more than $7.1 million in scholarship funds to more than 300 students since its inception in 2001, and has been named one of the most prestigious undergraduate scholarships by U.S. News & World Report. It is a program of the Davidson Institute for Talent Development, a national nonprofit organization headquartered in Reno, Nev. that supports profoundly gifted youth.
