China's Zhu Renmin: Human Ecological Restoration & A Pioneer of Saving the Environment Through Art

China’s Zhu Renmin is a multi-faceted artist, pioneer and early practitioner in the eco-landscape design field. Zhu became dean and research director of the Landscape and Architecture Design Institute at the China Academy of Art. He is presently director of the Research Center for Ecological Restoration at Zhejiang University

In the 1980’s Zhu created a new discipline in China, Human Ecological Restoration. This consists of the blending and merging of the aesthetic concepts of saving the environment through art and the theory of spiritual, natural and cultural ecologies.

For more than thirty years Zhu Renmin has strived to restore and reinvigorate the most desolate landscapes destroyed by man. These include barren beaches, deserted islands, forsaken cliffs, defiled canals and even China’s Yellow River.

Zhu Renmin achievements include the publication of numerous articles and papers on ecological restoration. He has successfully completed nearly RMB 100 Billion worth of restoration projects. His visionary work has resulted in extraordinary improvements in China’s environment, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) employment and sustained culture. Additionally, he has invested over RMB 50 Million into charitable funds and founded a number of services for spiritual ecology and free education.

He is a frequent guest speaker around the world, including here in the USA. Zhu continues to impress audiences at the UN Headquarters in New York City, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, UC Berkeley, the Polytechnic University of Milan, Italy, Peking University, Zhejiang University, Stanford University, and the China Central Academy of Fine Arts.

His work has been showcased by universities and local governments in China and Italy, as well as the Shanghai World Expo, to promote his message of “saving the environment through art.” He owns neither a house nor a car, choosing instead to devote his life to human ecological restoration.

Zhu Renmin is a master artist. He was raised in an artist’s family. His maternal grandfather is an historic figure and a very famous painter in China. A statue of him stands next to Hangzhou’s West Lake.

The art work you see below is a sample of his artistic talents. To support his causes Zhu Renim is offering these works for sale.

He has sold works through Christie’s and other auction houses around the world. The prices are marked. Please contact me at MarvelsofChina@gmail.com with your interest.

Coming Up Next: Encore Interview with Eric Jay Dolin, Author of When America First Met China: An Exotic History of Tea, Drugs, and Money in the Age of Sail.

The relationship between America and China is unique, fascinating -and if you’ve seen recent media source headlines it is complicated.

I went back into the show archives and found a 2016 interview we featured with American author Eric Jay Dolin. At that time we conversed about his book When America First Met China: An Exotic History of Tea, Drugs, and Money in the Age of Sail.

It was only eight years after the founding of the United States of America -then the world’s youngest nation- that Americans encountered China -one of the world’s oldest enduring civilizations. Relations since then have been anything but dull.

Brilliantly illuminating one of the least-understood areas of American history, best-selling author Eric Jay Dolin traces our fraught relationship with China back to its roots: the unforgiving nineteenth-century seas that separated a brash, rising naval power from a battered ancient empire.

It is a prescient fable for our time, one that surprisingly continues to shed light on our modern relationship with China.

Indeed, the furious trade in furs, opium, and beche-de-mer—a rare sea cucumber delicacy—might have catalyzed America’s emerging economy, but it also sparked an ecological and human rights catastrophe of such epic proportions that the reverberations can still be felt today.

Peopled with fascinating characters—from the “Financier of the Revolution” Robert Morris to the Chinese emperor Qianlong, who considered foreigners inferior beings—this page-turning saga of pirates and politicians, coolies and concubines becomes a must-read.

It is my hope that an examination of the historical context of the relationship between China and America will shed new light. I recommend Dolin’s book as a first-step in that direction.

We’ll feature the Confucius Moment, the Weekly Almanac, Treasures of China, and more!
