China's Zhu Renmin: Human Ecological Restoration & A Pioneer of Saving the Environment Through Art

China’s Zhu Renmin is a multi-faceted artist, pioneer and early practitioner in the eco-landscape design field. Zhu became dean and research director of the Landscape and Architecture Design Institute at the China Academy of Art. He is presently director of the Research Center for Ecological Restoration at Zhejiang University

In the 1980’s Zhu created a new discipline in China, Human Ecological Restoration. This consists of the blending and merging of the aesthetic concepts of saving the environment through art and the theory of spiritual, natural and cultural ecologies.

For more than thirty years Zhu Renmin has strived to restore and reinvigorate the most desolate landscapes destroyed by man. These include barren beaches, deserted islands, forsaken cliffs, defiled canals and even China’s Yellow River.

Zhu Renmin achievements include the publication of numerous articles and papers on ecological restoration. He has successfully completed nearly RMB 100 Billion worth of restoration projects. His visionary work has resulted in extraordinary improvements in China’s environment, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) employment and sustained culture. Additionally, he has invested over RMB 50 Million into charitable funds and founded a number of services for spiritual ecology and free education.

He is a frequent guest speaker around the world, including here in the USA. Zhu continues to impress audiences at the UN Headquarters in New York City, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, UC Berkeley, the Polytechnic University of Milan, Italy, Peking University, Zhejiang University, Stanford University, and the China Central Academy of Fine Arts.

His work has been showcased by universities and local governments in China and Italy, as well as the Shanghai World Expo, to promote his message of “saving the environment through art.” He owns neither a house nor a car, choosing instead to devote his life to human ecological restoration.

Zhu Renmin is a master artist. He was raised in an artist’s family. His maternal grandfather is an historic figure and a very famous painter in China. A statue of him stands next to Hangzhou’s West Lake.
