Coming Up Next: President Jeffrey Young and Director Leo Young of Hawaii's Buck Toy Club in Honolulu
Over 130 years ago a group of Chinese from the Southern Chinese village of Buck Toy arrived in Hawaii. They came as immigrants to create a new home for themselves.
Just before concluding my recent travels to Hawaii I was welcomed by two of their descendants to the Buck Toy Club on Vineyard Blvd. in Honolulu. Jeffrey Young is the president of the club, and his cousin Leo Young is one of the club’s directors. Both are descendants of those intrepid first-generation immigrants.
Tune in this coming Saturday to hear my interview with Jeffrey and Leo on the show’s Conversations segment. I was curious about the Buck Toy Club’s history and how this organization and other Hawaii-based Chinese benevolent societies perpetuate their culture and pass that responsibility to succeeding generations.
